For 30 years, we have done one thing with absolute dedication: engineering high-performance motor spindles that machine builders and manufacturers across the world stake their reputation on. From a garage in Luterbach, Switzerland, to aerospace facilities, automotive production lines, and medical manufacturing floors on every continent, our journey has been driven not by size, but by standard. 

Every milestone in our history reflects the same belief that founded us in 1995: that precision is never accidental, that innovation must serve a real engineering purpose, and that trust is built one spindle, one customer, and one breakthrough at a time. 


This is our story. Thirty years in the making. 

From a garage in Switzerland to manufacturing floors across the globe, Step-Tec's journey is one of relentless engineering purpose. More than 20,000 spindles. Decades of firsts. An unbroken commitment to the machine builders and manufacturers who depend on us. The next 30 years start now. 

Thirty years of innovation culminate in our most advanced diagnostic platform yet. The third-generation Spindle Diagnostic Module features a Profinet interface to the CNC, 3-axis vibration sensing, real-time tool position monitoring, and in-process optimization capabilities. It transforms every Step-Tec spindle into an intelligent node within the connected factory — enabling predictive maintenance, reduced unplanned downtime, and a new standard of manufacturing intelligence. 

In 2021, Step-Tec pushed the boundaries of spindle miniaturization with the Short HSK-T63 — an engineering masterpiece that integrates a shaft lock into an ultra-compact spindle body. Designed for machine tools with swiveling head kinematics, it enables true multi-process milling and turning operations in the most space-constrained configurations. Small in footprint. Uncompromising in performance.

Innovation at Step-Tec is often about removing complexity, not adding it. Our patented electromagnetic shaft lock eliminated the need for a hydraulic peripheral unit — a significant integration burden for machine builders. With this breakthrough, spindle integration became faster, cleaner, and more cost-effective. Another example of Step-Tec engineering that makes the entire machine better, not just the spindle. 

Thermal growth has always been the enemy of precision. In 2016, Step-Tec answered with Opticool — a proprietary cooling technology integrated into the new-generation HVC 140 spindle. Opticool actively compensates for temperature fluctuations caused by speed changes, dramatically reducing thermal impact on machine tool components. The result: faster thermal recovery, longer machine life, and tighter part tolerances. A quiet revolution in precision machining. 

In 2012, Step-Tec introduced a concept that would fundamentally change how machine builders work with spindle technology. The HPC 190 platform unified multiple individual spindle designs into a single, versatile, interchangeable architecture. Common parts. Broad performance bandwidth. No new housing required. This platform approach gave OEMs the freedom to design better machines faster — and gave end-users the confidence of standardized, proven technology. Today, the platform concept defines our entire portfolio.

As CNC systems grew in complexity, Step-Tec grew with them. The second-generation Spindle Diagnostic Module introduced a Profibus interface, enabling seamless, real-time communication between the spindle and the CNC controller. Richer diagnostic data, deeper integration, and a clearer path to fully connected machine tools — Step-Tec was laying the groundwork for the factory of the future, one spindle at a time. 

Step-Tec has always believed that a spindle should do more than spin. In 2002, we introduced our first-generation Spindle Diagnostic Module — one of the earliest embedded data collection systems in the industry. By monitoring critical parameters such as operating hours and bearing temperature, Step-Tec gave machine builders a new tool: foresight. Downtime became plannable. Maintenance became predictive. The smart spindle era had begun. 

Just two years after its founding, Step-Tec spindles were already operating in one of the most demanding manufacturing environments on earth. Boeing selected Step-Tec's high-speed spindles to machine integral aluminum structural components, achieving the high buy-to-fly ratios that aerospace efficiency demands. It was a defining moment of international recognition — and the beginning of a lasting relationship with the aerospace sector. 

Within a year of founding, STEP TEC designed and delivered its first major achievement — the HVC 140, a 42,000 rpm high-speed motor spindle developed for Mikron AG. It was not just a product launch; it was a statement of intent. Several thousand units later, the HVC 140 remains a cornerstone of the STEP TEC portfolio to this day — proof that great engineering does not age. Around this milestone, the company also adopted the name the industry would come to trust: Step-Tec.

Every great engineering story starts with a bold idea. STEP TEC — Spindle Tools Engineering Periphery Technology — was founded in Luterbach, Switzerland, with a single, audacious mission: to build the world's best high-performance milling spindle.
